What does fun have to do with spirituality?

sailing into adventure

sailing into adventure

Life is meant to be fun and adventure…

Fifteen years ago or thereabouts, in my book-devouring days in which I consumed a book a day almost (bleep bleep! exaggeration!!) I read a book called Celestine Prophecy.  I’ve found that most books I read have one main idea or theme that is worth taking, and it usually takes the author several hundred pages to explain this one idea and get us to believe it.  So the one thing I got from this book was that life is meant to be fun and adventure.

Or is it?……

Even though I didn’t understand totally at the time how fun and adventure could fit in with a spiritual life (I always thought being spiritual meant being calm and peaceful and holy and that having fun was the opposite of that) I still knew at some level that it was true and that life was meant to be fun.  It was kind of a radical way of thinking for me at the time.  My parents were very religious and we were taught that God was serious and that dancing and having fun were devil’s play.  Even laughing too much was frowned upon.  But with so many kids to try to keep in line I suppose our parents needed to use whatever tricks they had available.

Choose God or Fun……

For many years I was torn and tortured.  I began studying other religions and read about how monks practiced renunciation, giving up all worldly pleasures, and how this was the only way to really find God.  And I knew that they were right.  And this just seemed to prove that my parents were right.  If I wanted God I had to give up fun and enjoyment.  So I spent many tortured years grappling with demons of… doesn’t God want me to be happy?, and does He really want me to be poor?, and if God’s going to send me to hell for enjoying life then he’s not the kind of God I want to believe in anyway.  ..and I’m probably going straight to hell for even thinking a thought like this.

And then there were the religions that taught how to have all you wanted in life, like New Thought and Unity. And I knew that they were right. And I was even more tortured. I wanted the peace that those monks had but I wasn’t sure I was ready or ever would be…to give up having money and fun and a joy-filled life.

God is fun and fun is God…

Till finally one year after many years of soul-searching I finally, clearly, undisputedly saw the truth.  Spirituality was living fully alive and adventure was experiencing life fully alive.  They were the same thing.  When you are fully aware of your spiritual nature then every moment is a grand and marvelous adventure.  No matter what life brings it all is a lovely experience just because you are alive.   Fun, enjoyment, life, God…all the same.  Yes, the monks were right and yes the Unity’s were right.  Yes, yes, I could have it all.  I did not have to live a deprived life.  It is possible to live in inner peace and harmony and still have the life you always wanted.  Not only is it possible but they go together.  When your inner being is joyful then your outer life brings you more to be joyful about.  It’s a Law of Life!!

…outer space proof that all of life loves us

Wow!!  I am so excited I just have to stop everything and share this story.

Chris Hadfield, Canadian astronaut has “brought the miracle of space travel home to the world” allowing all of us to experience it.  But I just recently found a little known secret that NASA discovered that can change the way we see ourselves.

In my meditation class I’ve been talking about how all of life is here to support us and I keep getting proof of that but this one is just toooo amazing!!  I know you’ll love it!

My brother’s business place often has glue fumes from the place next door and yesterday my sister said she was at the store to buy some plants and the lady just happened to mention that spider plants, you know those long spiky leafed things that have all these babies hanging at the bottom, well they actually detoxify the air.  I thought, “Oh sure, just because they use carbon dioxide and give off oxygen then naturally the air would be more clean and pure.”  But I thought I’d check and see what Google had to say about it.  And guess what!!??  Not only spider plants but many plants do actually get rid of toxic substances in the air!  Apparently years ago NASA wanted to find a way to have clean air on the Space Station so they studied plants and discovered that many plants were able to remove toxic substances such as benzene and formaldehyde from the air.

I am so amazed!!  God loves us!!  If you ever had any doubt about how much you are loved just check out some of these sites or Google NASA Clean Air Study.  It is exciting news!!  And it is proof of how much God love us.  Everything we need is there for us!!  No matter how badly we pollute our world the remedy is there.  How could this possibly be true?  That we are so loved that we can destroy life and a beautiful, natural way to fix up our mess is there for us.  How could we ever think God is punishing us?  How could we ever believe He has deserted us?  He is here just giving, just loving.  It makes me want to cry.  … that we waste so much time feeling unloved when such great love is given.

Oh… I just thought of another story!!  Next time!

Choose Joy…

Laughter… (Photo credit: leodelrosa…)

Have you seen the TV ad where the guy is standing on the sidewalk in his work suit, a car driving by splashes him… he laughs.  He’s on the escalator going to his office, getting off he takes his hand off the rail to find a wad of gum stuck to his hand…he laughs.  He sits down at this desk, spills his coffee onto his computer, which sizzles and smokes…he laughs.  No matter what happens he is not bothered.  In this commercial it’s because he’s so happy about some car deal he got, but it’s a great story.  What if we could have that kind of inner happiness that no matter what happened we could just laugh about it because what we have is so much greater than any problem?  Because this is true.

When we meditate we begin to access that kind of inner power.  The power to choose joy in any circumstance.  And we begin to see that that is the only real choice.  Nothing else makes any sense.  How can we be anything but joyful when we are connected to Infinite Joy?  How can anything ever upset us when we know that God is right here in our lives?  Next time you see yourself getting caught by upset, anger, annoyance, any negative emotion see if you can remember who you are… and then just laugh about the problem…and choose joy.

2013…new year, new you!!

WOW!!  This little video really makes you think.  If you ever thought you were not good enough, didn’t deserve, God didn’t love you, then maybe it’s time to get over it!!!  Just think about the odds of you being you and being here now.  Even if the video is not all fact, it does make us think.

When will you realize that there’s no-one on the entire planet exactly like you?  …that it’s no coincidence that you’re here…that you have a special purpose?  When will you stop believing your thoughts of limitation?  When will you stop letting obstacles stop you?  When will you get over being run by your circumstances and blaming everyone and everything and whining about how life is unfair?

Maybe you were born for greatness!  Maybe you are way more and bigger and better than you could ever believe.  Maybe your Creator is watching over you and supporting you and loving you and maybe all you need to do is to step out in faith instead of playing it small.

Let’s start this new year and this New World in a whole new level of being…let’s stop our whining and excuses and make every day an adventure.  What if you were no worse than anyone else on the planet…and no better?  What if Creator/God loves you…yes you…and loves you as much as everyone else?  What if you are special, one in 7 billion…yes, one in 7 billion?!

Maybe it’s time to get over your limitations and live your greatness.  Right now!

meditation is like bamboo….

When you plant a certain type of bamboo seed you might wait a long time to see the result of your planting, but in the end it’s worth it.  It takes years before you see any sign of life, often four or five years.  You plant the seed and water it and you might expect that like with most seeds in a week or so you’ll see a baby plant, but you keep watering and waiting and you see nothing.  Soon a year has passed and then another year and you still keep waiting and watering.   You are determined because you know you’ll get a bamboo tree… you think.  Soon three years have passed and you still keep watering and waiting.  Four years… and then in year five suddenly a shoot appears above ground!   And then almost by magic that little shoot, in one season…in less than 2 months… will reach its full maturity of over 60 feet high.  It grows so fast you can almost watch it grow.  Magic!

Just because you do not see anything for so many years does this mean nothing is happening?  NO!!  Beneath the surface of the soil stuff is going on.   Every day, every month, every year roots are growing bigger, longer, stronger.  The bamboo plant is establishing its foundation.

If you feel like nothing is happening in your meditation or in your life…if you feel like you’re putting all this effort in and see no result… just remember this story of the bamboo.  Every meditation you do, every moment of awareness, every experience of beauty is growing your root system…establishing your foundation. None of it is ever lost or wasted.  And one day you will burst forth into the light and nothing will be the same again!  It’s inevitable!

Soul Spice for the Week:  This week in your meditation feel the truth of the bamboo story, knowing that no meditation is ever lost or in vain,  feel your roots growing and feel the beauty of bursting into the light, even if you just feel the light under the cover of the soil, experience it now.  And know that when you are ready, nothing can stop you!  Feel the reality of this now, not as something to look forward to in the future but something you can experience NOW!!

Before I die I will…

I recently saw this sign just off 118 Ave, and it made me stop and think for a while…a long while…and it made me realize how amazing people are and how talented.  I love driving down the street and seeing the sides of buildings covered with huge murals or painted boxes and posts…amazing art work.

This sign brought my mind to a sudden stop.  So big a message in such a few words.  Before I die I will… And instead of going off on another track as it usually does, this time my mind just hovered there for a while, feeling the depth of these five words.

Before I die I will… leave a significant positive mark upon the earth.

How about you?

Dance with gratitude…with fear…with pain

Gratitude loves dancing with Beauty
They dance with ease and grace,
Perfect dance partners.
Why not let gratitude dance with anger, with fear,
With resentment and pain?
“Cause when you do you find yourself dancing
Right into Heaven’s sweet embrace.

It’s easy to love beauty and it’s easy to feel gratitude for things that are beautiful.  But unwanted situations bring us feelings of pain and suffering and we don’t love those negative feelings or situations very much, do we?  But why?  What’s the benefit of resisting, avoiding, wallowing in analyzing?  Have any of these things ever worked?  No!  All these approaches just keep these things hanging around, and if they do seem to disappear well guess what?  a while later they return again.  So if we know they don’t work then why stay stuck in something that doesn’t bring us what we want?

Maybe all negative responses are simply habit, simply something we’ve been trained to do down through the generations without ever questioning why. some glitch in the human condition.

So why not try loving all unwanted situations and being grateful for them because maybe they’re the only way to get to the Peace that waits on the other side?  Why not set yourself free and help set the world free?

Pinch of Spice…Yes this week every time you notice a negative reaction, any negative emotion, ask yourself, “Why?  Is this emotion serving me?”  Then be willing to let it go and love the situation that you thought caused that emotion.  Feel gratitude for the situation and feel gratitude for the emotion.  Enjoy that feeling when you let go.  Enjoy letting gratitude dance with all your emotions.

ThanksGiving…my only prayer

“If the only prayer you ever said was Thank You, that would suffice.”  Meister Eckhart

This is my only prayer…

Thank You God…

Thank you for this day of life…and this opportunity to live in thanksgiving.  Thank you for family in which I am so deeply blessed.  Thank you for food, wonderful tastes, harvests, wheat fields and lovely round hay bales on country drives.

Thank you for friends, good health, plenty.

Thank you for sunshine.

Thank you for golden hued leaves dancing in my window and for warm autumn days. Thank you for birds and skies, for bountiful harvests supplied by trees and friends.  Thank you for a fridge overflowing with fresh apples and tomatoes.

Thank you for meditation and for being ever near, for all of life that brings me back to you when I stray.    Thank you for so much to give thanks for and a heart overflowing with gratitude.  Only love can live in a heart like this.

PINCH OF SPICE FOR THIS WEEK:  This is a perfect time to take time for gratitude and see how it changes your life.  Every day this week take at least 20 minutes to make your list of things you are thankful for.  Then be sure to take time to rest in feelings of gratitude.  Feel how it changes your Now and watch how it changes your future Nows.

“If the only prayer you ever said was Thank You, that would suffice.”  Meister Eckhart
