What does fun have to do with spirituality?

sailing into adventure

Life is meant to be fun and adventure…

Fifteen years ago or thereabouts, in my book-devouring days in which I consumed a book a day almost (bleep bleep! exaggeration!!) I read a book called Celestine Prophecy.  I’ve found that most books I read have one main idea or theme that is worth taking, and it usually takes the author several hundred pages to explain this one idea and get us to believe it.  So the one thing I got from this book was that life is meant to be fun and adventure.

Or is it?……

Even though I didn’t understand totally at the time how fun and adventure could fit in with a spiritual life (I always thought being spiritual meant being calm and peaceful and holy and that having fun was the opposite of that) I still knew at some level that it was true and that life was meant to be fun.  It was kind of a radical way of thinking for me at the time.  My parents were very religious and we were taught that God was serious and that dancing and having fun were devil’s play.  Even laughing too much was frowned upon.  But with so many kids to try to keep in line I suppose our parents needed to use whatever tricks they had available.

Choose God or Fun……

For many years I was torn and tortured.  I began studying other religions and read about how monks practiced renunciation, giving up all worldly pleasures, and how this was the only way to really find God.  And I knew that they were right.  And this just seemed to prove that my parents were right.  If I wanted God I had to give up fun and enjoyment.  So I spent many tortured years grappling with demons of… doesn’t God want me to be happy?, and does He really want me to be poor?, and if God’s going to send me to hell for enjoying life then he’s not the kind of God I want to believe in anyway.  ..and I’m probably going straight to hell for even thinking a thought like this.

And then there were the religions that taught how to have all you wanted in life, like New Thought and Unity. And I knew that they were right. And I was even more tortured. I wanted the peace that those monks had but I wasn’t sure I was ready or ever would be…to give up having money and fun and a joy-filled life.

God is fun and fun is God…

Till finally one year after many years of soul-searching I finally, clearly, undisputedly saw the truth.  Spirituality was living fully alive and adventure was experiencing life fully alive.  They were the same thing.  When you are fully aware of your spiritual nature then every moment is a grand and marvelous adventure.  No matter what life brings it all is a lovely experience just because you are alive.   Fun, enjoyment, life, God…all the same.  Yes, the monks were right and yes the Unity’s were right.  Yes, yes, I could have it all.  I did not have to live a deprived life.  It is possible to live in inner peace and harmony and still have the life you always wanted.  Not only is it possible but they go together.  When your inner being is joyful then your outer life brings you more to be joyful about.  It’s a Law of Life!!

Living life as an adventure

Life as an adventure…What exactly does this mean?  Well. I looked up adventure in the dictionary and this is what it says:  “There’s an element of uncertainty in adventure.”

Human beings seem to want certainty… we want the security of knowing what to expect each day.  Yet at the same time we long for the adventure of the unknown.  And we are envious of anyone who is adventurous.  When I ran away from home at the age of 30, left my husband, my beautiful home, my ten year teaching career and moved to a new city where I knew no-one, had no job, and no place to stay, my friends were envious.  Well, some of them actually thought I was crazy but mostly they wished they could do that.

We all love exploring new lands, we’re drawn to sports like sky-diving, skiing, mountain climbing, that have some element of uncertainty and even danger.  Even the thought of jumping out of an airplane is exciting, exhilarating, or swooshing down a fresh, pristine mountain slope where no-one has ever been before.  Goosebumps just thinking about it.

What is it about adventure that draws us?  Perhaps it is that in that moment of daring adventure, face to face with the danger of the unknown, this is when we experience aliveness, when we experience our true nature of ever expanding newness.  And this is all we really live for…to realize our true being.

Meditation is an inner adventure, into your soul, your subconscious mind, infinite realms of  consciousness, infinite worlds there to explore.  Let meditation be your way of life, let the adventure of life bring you aliveness…then eventually all of life becomes a grand and wonderful adventure.  because everything is seen newly… freshly, because you are reborn in each moment.

Spring’s Treasures

Spring’s Perfume

Wind whipping through my hair, sunshine on my face and sending its warm and oh-so-longed-for rays through my body, and all the glorious wafts of spring’s amazing perfumes.  And all the brilliant, glowing greens of new leaves, new life!!  What a great idea!  A last minute adventure to go and spend a few days on the houseboat before it sold and I was on my way to town for a coffee, and just loving the drive down winding, hilly, tree-lined roads with the top down in my little car.

Spring is filled with wonderful surprises.  Later that evening I was walking with my sister and sudden waves of the most beautiful fragrances blew our way.  I looked around to see which tree would have such wonderful blossoms but she said no, it’s not flowers, it’s the leaves, she smelled that every Spring.  Not believing her ridiculous story I looked around and there were no flowering trees or flowers of any kind nearby but there was a giant poplar tree right in front of us.  I walked over.  It was filled with baby leaves that had just come out of their buds.  They looked wet, shining in the light of the sun.  I touched one and it was sticky.  New born leaves!!!  So fresh, so brilliant green, so new!!  And YES!!!  When I bent over to smell it, it had a most wonderful perfume.

Pinch of Spice:  For a little spice this week, each day go for at least a half hour walk in the woods and notice all the gifts that Spring has for us.  Relish in each thing you notice taking at least 5 minutes to just absorb the wonder and beauty of it.   Notice the new leaves, birds, insects, the colors, smells, touch, flowers, grasses, fluffy clouds, warm Spring air.  Notice how you feel new energy, new life, close your eyes and take at least 5 more minutes to just be there and feel the stirring of new life inside of you.  Take that energy with you to renew you through the week and weeks to come.

Pinch of Spice …Senior moments!!!

who's aging?

Is this a senior moment?

Aging, memory loss, etc. is no fun…or is it?

Whew! I’m back.  It took forever to get things set up here so this blog thing is working properly.  And then family stuff!  I just had a traumatic and yet beautiful and amazing couple weeks.  We just moved my oldest sister into a senior center …yikes!! she can’t be that old!! where meals are provided.  Even though she acts like a teenager and is more fun than anyone I know, we and she finally had to admit that she is aging and starting to have senior moments?? (like in the pic above) and she is actually over 80 years old.

A senior can change your life…

It is such a privilege to be with someone who is aging and going through all the pain and loneliness and fears that are associated with aging.  I am so blessed that I can be there to share that with my sister.  Few people know or can even begin to understand the traumas of life as one reaches the age where you realize that life and health are not a given and although each day becomes a gift it is also one more day of facing loneliness, lost dreams, forgetfulness, and aches and pains.  Senior – ness is not easy.  The more that I spend time with her the more I realize how much it’s enriching my life.  And as my life is enriched I hope I can pass that energy on to others.

Soul Spice adventure assignment for the week: Borrow a senior, change your life!! Find a senior or someone who is alone and aging, and doesn’t get out much.  Check your family, your community, or find a senior center nearby.  Set up a schedule of at least one or two visits a week for a couple hours each.  Ask questions, let them talk, just hang out.  I’ve never in my life felt more appreciated than when I spent time with a lonely senior. It will change your life!!
Please share your progress and insights, or lack of… at the end of the week and on-goingly.  And follow this blog to get your weekly Pinch of Spice right to your email.  And most of all enjoy the adventure of life!

I’m flying!!

What is it about the “I’m flying” scene from the Titanic movie that we all love? Yes, it was a magical moment of love.  But isn’t it so much more than that?  Maybe it’s because it brings us to aliveness…we feel it. As we watch that scene we feel like we are flying. We feel like we are alive…. alive like we’ve never been before. Standing there at the bow of the ship as it moves forward into unknown territory, feeling totally vulnerable.  Any moment, any wrong move and our life could be over….this is what aliveness feels like. Being right there at the very forefront of the ship, the frontmost of the frontmost of life, heading ever forward into newness, into the unknown, and creating life right there in the moment, not knowing but creating as we go. Life and death are both an option.  This is being fully alive in the moment. This is living life as a daring adventure! Wheeeee!!  Can you feel it? I’m flying! We are flying!!

Hello world, hello Universe, hello out there all you fellow adventurers.  Whew!! I can’t believe I made it to here.  It took a lifetime of struggle and months of trying to figure out how to get my message to the world, and now, well I guess just because I have a blog doesn’t mean anyone will ever find their way here.  And even if they do it doesn’t mean they’ll read my message.  And even if they do it doesn’t mean they’ll hear the message and get it.

But here I am… and I am so excited to be here…excited-er than you can ever imagine.  Life is just getting better and more fun by the minute.  And I’m so grateful that you are here reading this.  I need you to walk along with me on this magnificent and wonderful adventure of life.  My job in this blog thing is to bring a whole lot of spice into your soul… to inspire you and to be inspired by you so I can inspire even more.

I have to admit I’m a total loser at computer and tech stuff so if this ever gets found by anyone that will be a huge miracle.  And much as I’d love for the whole world to come along with me, God’s great and magnificent gifts for me don’t include technological wisdom, so if this ever gets into a reader’s hands it will be by His sheer Grace and not by anything I’ve done.  So if you’re reading this then you have been chosen.  So open yourself up to receive and get ready for the adventure of your life!

Namaste!!  I love you Universe, I love you readers, I love you God.        Till next time.
